Mission Statement: One Step Further provides quality programs that help adults, youth, parents, and families take positive steps in their lives. Our trained professionals devote time to each program so that participants may reach their goals and outcomes.

About:

The Family Factor Program is one of many offered by One Step Further, a private nonprofit focused on bettering the lives of youths and families.

This program offers a 10-week course that meets two hours per week, focusing on building acceptance among family and friends of an LGBT+ youth. Though individual youths from ages 12 to 24 can join, the program places emphasis on collective participation.

“Parents and other family members may ascribe to myths or misconceptions about sexual orientation or gender identity that make their and their child’s adjustments much more difficult,” said a pamphlet, written for the Family Factor Program. The program wants to debunk these ideologies.

Specific learning concepts that will be taught include: the LGBT+ community, coming out issues, risky behaviors, relationships and how they might change, community resources and finding understanding. Besides these learning outcomes, speakers and panels will attend some classes.

Other topics discussed in the class include: defining LGBT+ community, family limitations and boundaries, transgender issues, faith and religion and healthy relationships.

All classes use evidence-based information and provide access to reading material, websites, support services and counseling.

Most youths participating in the course, have either already come out to their family and friends or anticipate coming out in the future. Though the Family Factor Program is free, admission will be selective depending on individual cases and potential improvement in the youth’s life.

For confidentiality purposes, families and youths may meet at local nonprofits or churches, instead of the main location.
