Action Greensboro

About:

Action Greensboro opened in 2001 as a way to enhance the life of people living in the city.

Six Foundations, the group that funds Action Greensboro, went on a trip and decided it was important to conduct a study to find out what improvements Greensboro residents wanted to see in their city.

Today, the nonprofit likes to call itself the sister organization to the Chamber of Commerce.

“We have a saying here, ‘that everyday is different because some days we may have a community convening or we may have an event with council members,” said Candace Tucker, the operations and communications manager of Action Greensboro.

They also have several programs they provide to residents in the city.

The synerG Young Professionals program tries to attract young professionals to Greensboro by allowing them to meet others with potential similarities.

Another program targeting young people is the Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program, which is directed by Beth Mannella. Opportunity Greensboro is a collective made of the seven university and college chancellors in Greensboro as well as business leaders. The Fellows Program, a part of Opportunity Greensboro, gives students a 10-week paid internship experience over the summer.

Lastly, there is the Downtown Greenway Office - a four-mile loop, with four cornerstones and public art.

Tucker thinks there are a few great achievements the nonprofit has made since introducing themselves to the city.

“We make things happen,” she said. “I think we are one of the leading voices of the community.”

First, Action Greensboro helped to bring new places to convene including LeBauer and Center City Park as well as the Grasshopper Stadium.

“It brings the community together where no one is judging each other - everyone is just together having a good time,” Tucker said, referring to the areas they helped to have built for the city residents.

She also thinks all the young professional programs they offer are achievements because they showcase Greensboro to students who may have not seen downtown before nor have met many people with similar interests.

Action Greensboro does not need a specific set of stable volunteers; however, they do need situational volunteers for large events. To find out more about the nonprofit, visit their website listed above.
